There are so many things I have to do. I have to do my work in school, help my mom in the kitchen, and study hard for the midterm exams. But today is a special day; it's Hari Kemerdekaan! The people of Indonesia chose this day to celebrate their Independence Day. It was an exciting day at school because we had such a wonderful celebration (even if there was no firework show like the other days). As usual, we started off with morning assembly and then we were playing teacher games and singing songs. After that, we did some team work on our project which is about our culture and traditions in Indonesia. We had a short break when it's time for the flag raising ceremony then after that we were having a delicious lunch. We also did some games and then I really wanted to go home because I was really tired. On my way home, I was thinking about what I learned today in school. I learned about the history of Indonesia and the spirit of our independence day. Tomorrow will be another celebration here in my country! Bonfire night is a party for celebrating English traditions where people make a huge fire in the ground and everyone would sit around it and enjoy warming up their hand from hot coals because bonfires are usually big fires. I'm so looking forward to it! In the Indonesian Independence Day Celebration, we got a lesson about how Indonesia became free from The Netherlands from two special guests. They were Ms. Soekarno and Dr. Hatta. They actually helped Indonesia to become free from The Netherlands peacefully by signing a contract called “The Round Table Conference Agreement” with other countries that was involved in this conflict. This agreement stated that Indonesia would be free from Dutch rule and if they really wanted to, they could keep their land as a peace offering after a year of discussion between The Netherlands and Indonesia . The day was absolutely enjoyable. It was the best Independence Day Celebration ever. We sang our national anthem, listened to some stories about Indonesia Independence, and did some interesting activities like making traditional batik shirts and doing puppet shows . I am really happy that my country celebrates its Independence Day on August 17th along with other countries that gained independence from their colonial rulers during the same time of 18th-20th century (most notably the USA, France, Belgium, etc.). If you're curious about our celebration of independence month in Indonesia on August 17th, here are some facts for you! It has been three months since Jakarta won the bid to host the 2018 Asian Games on November 23rd 2014. I am lucky to be part of this celebration with my friends. We have fun making traditional Indonesian shirts, playing cultural games, and competing for the best Indonesian tray. I wish the same atmosphere is maintained by other countries in their celebration of independence month. A school is a place where people learn, play, collect knowledge and dreams.
